Burnley transfer target stalling over new contract

Gustavo Hamer has a contract offer from his current club on the table, but may have had his head turned by Burnley.

Coventry City are desperate to keep Gustavo Hamer. Having missed out in the Championship play-off final – despite Hamer getting on the scoresheet – they recognise that the player will have a huge role to play if the club are going to go one better this season.

However, according to Voetball Rotterdam, Burnley, Fulham, and Leeds United are all interested in signing the 26-year-old. Due to this, the midfielder is yet to put pen to paper on his new deal with Coventry.

Coventry boss Mark Robins hasn’t been surprised by the interest in Hamer. As quoted by the BBC, Robins said, “he was the best midfield player in the Championship last season – 100%…There’s speculation around Gus and it’s obvious speculation.”

The former Feyenoord man was indeed in fine form last time out. Hamer was at the heart of Coventry’s success, and racked up 9 goals and 10 assists in 41 Championship appearances. He certainly looked like a player ready to take his game to the next level. Vincent Kompany clearly noticed this whilst he was guiding Burnley to the Championship title last season.

Hamer could be a star for Burnley

Burnley can now offer Hamer Premier League football, likely on better financial terms than Coventry have been able to put forward. The former Netherlands under-20 international would bring an exciting new dynamic to the Clarets’ current midfield contingent.

Hamer offers quality at both ends of the pitch. He can break up attacks, pick a pass, and finish chances that come his way. He has the energy to travel quickly between both boxes, and has the capacity to dictate matches in the Championship.

If Burnley can get a deal over the line, he’d be a very welcome arrival at Turf Moor. However, even if the player decides against staying at Coventry, Burnley would still have to make a stronger play for his services than Fulham or Leeds.
