Burnley have had a loan bid rejected for Tottenham centre back Eric Dier.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham would not want Dier to depart on loan unless he had a contract extension, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Dier is said to prefer to stay and fight for his place in the team before moving on to pastures new in the summer, but he and Spurs are now said to be hopeful a resolution can be found before the window closes.

Dier has reportedly been of interest to Bayern Munich, who his former teammate Harry Kane left for earlier this month.

Would Eric Dier be a good signing?

Eric Dier is a 29-year-old centre back who can also play at right back and in defensive midfield.

He has been at Tottenham for nine years, joining in 2014 from Sporting Lisbon. He has gone on to make over 250 appearances for Spurs, scoring 12 goals.

He is also an England international, playing 49 times, scoring three. His most iconic goal for England being a header scored from a corner against Germany, as the Three Lions came from two goals down to win 3-2, with Dier scoring the winner.

He also scored England’s winning penalty at the World Cup in 2018, as they knocked out Colombia to progress to the quarter-finals.

Dier had fallen out of favour at Tottenham with the likes of Cristian Romero and summer signing Micky Van de Ven being preferred to the Englishman.

If Burnley were to get Dier, he would add vital experience to the back line and the whole squad, something which Burnley could use. It is unclear if Burnley would go in with another offer.

Burnley have been adding to their defensive options recently, bringing in Hannes Delcroix from Anderlecht.
