Burnley looking to hijack Southampton move for winger

Burnley are interested in signing Genk winger Joseph Painstil.

According to Ibrahim Sannie Daara of Ghana Soccer Net, Burnley are looking to hijack his move after proposed moves to Leeds United and Southampton have fallen through.

Paintsil had been heavily linked with Southampton over the last few weeks, with the reported move being a swap deal between the Saints and Genk, with Saints striker Paul Onuachu returning to Genk after leaving them for the south coast in January, and Paintsil heading in the other direction.

However, the main stumbling block in the move was Paintsil, as it is unclear whether he would want to make the move to the Championship.

As Burnley play in the Premier League though, the player is a lot more likely to want to move to Turf Moor over St Mary’s.

Joseph Paintsil is a 25-year-old winger who is predominantly plays on the right, but can also play on the left and through the middle in attacking midfield.

The Ghanaian had a sensational season last year, getting 28 goal contributions (including a few assists for Onuachu) in 36 games as Genk finished second in the Belgian Pro League, despite winning the regular season.

He has represented his nation at senior level nine times so far, but has failed to contribute to a goal as of yet.

Burnley have brought in a number of wingers and attacking players so far this season, and it doesn’t look like they are going to stop heading into the final 48 hours of the transfer window.

They had been looking at bringing in Paintsil’s teammate Mike Tresor, but that deal appears to have fallen through as the player has decided to stay put.

Patson Daka has also emerged as a late target from Leicester, so it will be interesting to see who Burnley manage to get in the door before the deadline.
