Burnley are interested in signing Manchester United left-back Alvaro Fernandez.

According to Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas, Burnley are one of a number of clubs interested.

However, it appears that La Liga side Granada are leading the race, with the Spaniards wanting him on loan.

They also want an option to buy, but it is yet to be decided if the Red Devils would be willing to let him go permanently at this stage.

His current contract expires at the end of this season, but United do have an option to extend his contract for a further year if they wish to do so.

Who is Alvaro Fernandez and would he be a good signing?

Fernandez is a 20-year-old left-back who joined United from Spanish giants Real Madrid in 2020. He also spent some of his youth at Deportivo La Coruna before moving to Madrid. He can play anywhere down the left-hand side, possessing some great attacking qualities.

The Spain under-19 international spent last season out on loan in the Championship at Preston North End, where he impressed. He also joined United for their pre-season tour in the USA.

Left-back is probably a position where Burnley do need more depth. Their current options are the long-serving Charlie Taylor, who has been at the club since his love from Leeds United in 2017. Their backup option is Owen Dodgson, who has primarily played for the U21s since he joined from Manchester United in 2020.

Taylor’s contract expires at the end of this season, and despite only being 29 years old, Burnley May look to move him on at the end of the season as he is one of their high earners.

So looking at a younger left-back option with a much higher ceiling in Fernandez may actually be quite a smart move from the Clarets. He also would not have to relocate too far, either.

Despite this, Burnley’s priority target looks to still be a winger. They have reportedly missed out on Dodi Lukebakio to Sevilla and Ernest Nuamah to Lyon, whilst they still chase Nathan Tella of Southampton and Johan Bakayoko of PSV Eindhoven.
